Levels like New Donk City and the Mushroom Kingdom are on par with Delfino Plaza from Super Mario Sunshine at certain moments, but they feel sort of clobbered together within the game as a whole. The Ruined Kingdom is the best example of Odyssey's problem with having consistent visual theme. These styles might've been memorable enough to hold their own in standalone Mario games, but as one-offs within Odyssey, they feel out of place alongside the more normal-looking Kingdoms in Super Mario Odyssey. This is most noticeable in the Luncheon Kingdom, which adopts a low poly art style for its world, and the Ruined Kingdom that features a realistic castle and has Mario fight a dragon. While Odyssey is a better 3D platformer than Sunshine, most Kingdoms in the newer game have unique graphical styles that don’t mesh well with each other, so it winds up feeling thematically inconsistent. Released for Nintendo Switch in 2017, Odyssey sees Mario visiting Kingdoms around the world to stop the wedding of Bowser and Peach. It’s a shame that Super Mario Odyssey couldn't replicate the same kind of consistency. Because of Isle Delfino, Super Mario Sunshine is one of the most fun Mario games ever despite being one of the most challenging. It's just too bad that subsequent titles forgot about that sense of cohesion. Super Mario Sunshine maintains this tropical feel throughout, and it helped establish a consistent atmosphere and visual style that has served as a basis for each Mario since. Sunshine's gameplay definitely feels less polished than other modern Mario games, but the game's commitment to its tropical setting makes it really stand out from others, like Odyssey, where the environments feel disconnected. This leads to a sense of ludonarrative resonance not typically found in Mario games that almost always focus more on gameplay than plot or worldbuilding. You can even see some areas in the distance on other stages, adding to the cohesion. Some less common settings, like a harbor and amusement park, are also thrown in for good measure seemingly just because they work so well within the setting. Every aspect of the game goes back to that same core theme of a tropical adventure. SUPER MARIO SUNSHINE 64 REDDIT FULLInstead of a grim castle inexplicably full of lava, we get an area set within a volcano. Instead of a desert level, we get Gelato Beach. While Sunshine features eight worlds like most Mario games, they all fall under this tropical resort theme. Last, but not least there are now damage numbers when you fight. Also bosses now have their own separate level, you don’t have to fight them right after you have finished the level, which should lower the difficulty considerably. You can now play the level you have completed before again to get some extra jewels or level your character up some more, should the next level be too difficult. The next changes all affect the world map. To get to the point, you can now change directions whenever you stop your character, as you can see below.Īnother thing that has been requested multiple times has been added: tapping instead of swiping to choose a direction. But now that I’ve played it for over 20 hours, I think the difficulty lies (and should lie) elsewhere and not in the controls. I was a little afraid, that this might make the player too powerful and that the game would become super easy. One complaint I often got over the course of the development is that you can’t tell the character to turn around and go the other direction (you can only choose a path when you reach a fork). The beta is officially over and I’ve started implementing some of the excellent suggestions I got. I can safely say that the console version of SwapQuest is the definitive version of the game and especially with the added coop mode I hope it earns its place on this wonderful hardware. Gamemaker palette swap code#It took over a year to complete the console version, which included many rewrites of the game code and countless hours of testing, but I feel it was worth it. I really hope everyone looking for a slightly different rpg experience is going to have fun with SwapQuest. But remember: you can always invite a friend over and try it together! They are a lot harder, have all new attacks and you must beat them before the timer runs out. After the PlayStation Vita release I got a lot of positive feedback from people saying that they loved the boss fights, so I decided to add alternate versions of the normal bosses to the end game. For extra comfort, the player can switch between those two styles anytime with a press on the R3 button.Īll these more technical improvements aside there is also some new content for those looking for an extra challenge: remix bosses. It’s totally optional and was meant as an alternative for all those people that don’t love pixel art as much as I do. It takes all the pixel art graphics in the game and – through some magic and mostly math – transforms them so that they look a lot smoother and more high-res. This player doesn’t get saved for later sessions, but plays and develops just as the normal player.Īnother graphical enhancement the console version got is what I dubbed the “Smooth Asset” mode. This creates a temporary second player to help you out. If player one should ever be stuck in a level, player two can grab the second controller and hit any button, which then initializes the “Guest Mode”. One last thing about the coop mode I’d like to mention is that this also affects the single player in a fun way. And as with most coop experiences, you are not limited to helping each other, you could also grab the path tiles that the other player is desperately looking for or spend all your hard-earned jewels in the store before your coop partner is able to. Playing with a friend really gives a new dimension to the game, especially as both players can choose different character classes that complement each other. But after a second round of reworking the entire code (with a period of six weeks in which I wasn’t even able to test the game as everything was broken), it finally came together. At first, I thought “just adding a second player is easy”. Having grown up with consoles, couch coop (or “not so coop”) was always a huge deal to me and my friends. It doesn’t make the animations any smoother, but the way every object moves is a lot more pleasant to the eye.Īfter that was out of the way, I started working on something much more fun and meaningful for the game: the coop mode. The first big enhancement, which required changing almost every piece of code in the game, was upping the framerate from 30 to 60 frames per second, which makes the movement in the game much more fluid. The results may be subtle in places, but hopefully noticeable, so let’s get to it. Even though it’s a pretty old-school 2D-experience, we wanted to use some of the power the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One offer to enhance the experience. But just porting SwapQuest over wasn’t what we had in mind. Gamemaker palette swap full#When SwapQuest launched on PlayStation Vita last year, we knew this would only be the beginning, as we wanted to bring it to the big screen to unleash the game’s full potential.
In the case of the IBM/Lenovo Thinkpad, this second external monitor port comes via the external docking station. What I am used to is a laptop with two graphics controllers, but one of the two graphics controllers can control either the native screen or a 2nd external monitor. To clarify what I am starting to hate the MBP for not having, I am not looking for a laptop that has 3 graphics controllers (one for the native screen and two more for external monitors). DIAMOND DISPLAYLINK USB GRAPHICS SOFTWARE DOESNT WORK DRIVERSI would expect any other setup to be so niche as to have no chance of having good drivers for anything but Windows. Having said that, I think there's a lot of good information here and you can usually find some help.īack on topic a bit, I'm curious: How many laptops can do triple screens at all? What sort of hardware does this setup require? In general, I would expect that if you want more than two screens, you're using a desktop with multiple video cards. There's no obligation for anyone to respond to posts, nor any guarantee of timeliness if they do. They're for users, by users, and VMware employees may occasionally poke their heads in. I am looking to know what sanctioned solutions for this are supported by VMware (i.e. I am not looking for that set of tradeoffs.īesides the Matrox solutions, my only choices seem to be somehow supporting that extra monitor via Ethernet, Firewire or USB. I got the notice that VMware Fusion 3.1 was available with tons of fixes and it whet my appetite again for dual external monitor glory, so I upgraded to it yesterday.Ĭan someone please tell me exactly what I need to buy in order to get this reliably support dual external monitors in this environment?Īnd please don't say Dual or Triple-head to go by Matrox. So, fine, I took it out of the mix and I returned the adapter. However, given the choice to have VM support or a 2nd external monitor, I had no choice but to buckle and choose VMware over the adapter. As long as I was not trying to run a VM with Fusion, the external USB to DVI adapter worked great. I had no other problems with this setup besides VMware fusion. I noticed that when I added the USB to DVI adapter to the mix along with the latest DisplayLink drivers (this is back when I was running VMware Fusion 3.0), it would work, but not very reliably and it would crash my Win7 圆4 VM or cause other weird problems way too much. To do so, I purchased a USB to DVI DisplayLink solution by Diamond (since the MBP only has a single mini-DisplayPort port) in order to be able to control the 2nd external monitor. I want to be able run both of them with this software/hardware setup. I have two beautiful external LCD monitors on my desk. RingCentral vs Dialpad: Compare VoIP solutionsĢ0 VPN subscriptions and bundles on sale now How to set up an NFS server on Ubuntu Server 22.04 With the Ultima games, it's particularly challenging, because prior to VI, which marked the easy turning point where you basically wanted to (or had to) stick with the PC versions, there's really no ideal decision to make for any of the versions. From a collecting standpoint, I usually try to get the original version of the game, rather than one of the ports, but that still doesn't necessarily mean I want to play that version. I often have this internal debate, i.e., whether or not I should always play the original versions of a game or seek out the best versions of the game. just curious in what way if you don't mind going into a little bit more detail. I don't mind adding plot, just don't want to lose too much of it. but I definitely don't want to lose any of the plot. I really like the Dragon-Warrior style of engine, particularly for those games. What do you mean about Ultima 5 using the Ultima 6 engine? Ultima 6 was on the SNES, not the NES. I meant NES in that sentence when I said PC. I believe FF7 and a game called Suikoden were the one's that got me to jump on the bandwagon.ĭefinitely still prefer western RPGS or western style RPG's like Dragons Dogma. Thanks due again to my friend constantly playing them and urging me to buy FF7 and a Playstation. My best man and best friend got me into anime's in the early-mid 90's (I'm an artist by hobby) and I think having that interest drew me into trying and playing JRPG's among my Diablo and Elder Scrolls gaming. Exodus ultima iii c64 for free#(I got it for free from some kind of Nintendo Magazine club promo.I cant remember exactly) I had a very hard time getting into JRPG's as well because from 1984-1990 all I did was play CRPG's on a C64 (couldn't afford an Apple) and when I got a copy of Dragon Warrior on NES my first thoughts were, "This is Ultima for little kids". I'm sure if I grew up with console-style RPGs first, I'd prefer their stylings. Of course, I'm biased, having grown up on great computer-style RPGs like Phantasie and Pool of Radiance. As much as I've tried, I've never gotten into console-style (mostly JRPG) RPGs. Exodus ultima iii c64 series#After Ultima 5, the series morphed into something I wasn't interested in anymore. Ultima 6 was where Ultima and I parted ways because I didn't like that installment at all. How do the SNES ports compare to the PC versions? I don't know. It's basically an extremely stupid and boring button masher. Ultima 7 on the SNES is even worse than Ultima 6. The only reason to play it is if you like torture. I never liked Ultima 5 to begin with, and the NES version is borderline unplayable. Whereas on the PC Ultima 5 shared the same general engine as Ultima 4, on the NES the game uses a Ultima 6 engine and the result isn't pretty. Ultima 5 on the NES is rare, and also more than a bit bad. Are they better than the computer versions? No. Ultima 4 in particular is streamlined in a good way. They're a bit simplified, but they definitely manage to bring a worthwhile Ultima experience. The NES Ultima 3 and 4 games are very good. the Ultima 3, 4 and 5 games are basically using the Dragon Warrior engine" I'm not sure what you mean by "I noticed that on the PC. but totally forgot that I had these! Pools of Radiance must suck on the NES. How weird is it that they basically ported these PC games? Kind of cool. and I also noticed I had AD&D Hillsfar, Heros of the Lance, and Pools of Radiance, Bards Tale, and. Total random side note, but I was looking at my NES games (I only have a few), because I wanted to verify that in fact the three Ultima games I had were 3, 4, and 5. is the plot the same for Ultima 4 on the PC and the NES version, and is the NES version basically better? the Ultima 3, 4 and 5 games are basically using the Dragon Warrior engine from what I can tell (is that true?). So I kind of want to go back and play those if possible since I hear that U4 has an awesome plot line.īut here's my question, I really hate the UI for the Ultima 1-5 games however, I noticed that on the PC. The first Ultima I personally started with, was Ultima 6 (and of course, Underworld 1 and 2, U7, U7 p2, and U8). It seemed way too out of date, and I just couldn't get into it. joke), the truth is, I've never really spent more than say. 14 Q Did this piece have any comments about any Clairol or 15 Matrix Essentials products? 16 A I think it has to do with Color - ColorGraphics, by 17 Matrix. 12 Q What did she do for Farr Systems? 13 A Teaches products.
